FORMER CITY CLERK CHARGED WITH FELONY FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING FUNDS FROM MT. LEONARD

A former city clerk at a village in Saline County has been charged with a felony for allegedly stealing nearly $20,000 from the village’s financial accounts.

A probable-cause statement says the Village of Mt. Leonard reportedly obtained bank statements from Community Bank in Marshall that reportedly showed the village’s bank account dwindled from $18,000 to $1,000 between July 2016 and July 2017.

The statement says former clerk Cynthia Ann Ballenger, of Malta Bend, is alleged to have taken $10,232.76 out of the village’s general fund and another $9,637.68 from a special account belonging to the village. Ballenger also allegedly wrote herself a check for $100 per month more than the village agreed to pay her to be city clerk.

Online court documents say Ballenger has been charged with one count of a Class D Felony for Stealing of $750 or More. Ballenger reportedly posted $10,000 surety bond on October 10.

Ballenger’s arraignment hearing is scheduled to be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, at Saline County Circuit Court in Marshall.
