A 57-year-old Sweet Springs man who has been charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting an elderly man on February 28 is due in court this week.
According to a probable-cause statement, a law-enforcement officer was dispatched to the 700 block of West Old Highway 40 to investigate the report of the assault. The elderly man was found on the cement floor of the shop with blood near his head.
Authorities talked to Danny Brian Thompson, who had made the call, and he reportedly admitted the two men were arguing. He said the elderly man got in his face, so he backhanded the elderly man. He said the victim fell and hit his head when he landed.
Online court documents say Thompson has been charged with a Class D Felony for Assault in the Second Degree.
On March 20, the prosecuting attorney nor family members of the victim had any objections to Thompson being able to be released on personal-recognizance bond. On March 22, Thompson posted $15,000 personal-recognizance bond.
Thompson’s next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at Saline County Circuit Court.
