A new mayor was elected by voters in Marshall on Tuesday, April 3.
According to unofficial results from the Saline County Clerk’s office, Julie Schwetz unseated two-term incumbent mayor Mark Gooden 1,159 to 372 votes. John Cozort also received 102 votes.
Five current city council members ran unopposed. They were Dewey Hendrix in Ward 1; Chuck Hines in Ward 2; Charlie Guthrey in Ward 3; and Tom Hagedorn and Kathy Vasquez in Ward 4. All of the seats are for two-year terms, except Vasquez’s, which is to fill out the unexpired term of Rudy Reyes through April 2020.
Three candidates were on the ballot for Marshall School Board, and challenger Harry Carrell raked in the most votes with 1,170. Incumbents, Eddie Harper received 910 votes and Mike Mills 887. By those results, Carrell and Harper were elected to the two three-year positions.
Election numbers are scheduled to be finalized and made official later this week.
