University of Missouri Extension in Howard County, in collaboration with Lincoln University Extension, is scheduled to hold a Faffa Malan Chart (FAMACHA) training workshop from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 21.
MU Extension livestock specialist Heather Conrow says this hands-on workshop will be at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Fairgrounds Road in Fayette. Cost is $25, and enrollment is limited to 30.
FAMACHA scoring identifies anemia in small ruminants and allows producers to make informed de-worming decisions. The five-color chart uses the bottom eyelid color of a sheep or goat to indicate the level of anemia.
The workshop also is scheduled to include training on fecal egg counts. This test estimates parasite load and helps determine if the current de-wormer remains effective or if resistance is occurring.
Conrow said 4-H youths from Boone, Carroll, Chariton, Howard, Saline and Randolph Counties will receive four sheep/goat project hours for attending the workshop.
Registration is requested by March 19.
