Two Columbia residents are facing felony charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle and attempting to elude authorities in Cooper County.
The Cooper County Sheriff’s Office says at about 9 p.m. on Monday, March 9, a deputy tried to stop a motorcycle without a rear license plate on Highway 87 near I-70. After initiating the traffic stop, the motorcycle accelerated and failed to yield to the deputy. The driver of the motorcycle lost control and laid the bike down near Highway 87 and Nancy Potter Road. The rider then fled on foot. Members of the Cooper County Sheriff’s Office, Boonville Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to locate the suspect without success. During the investigation, the motorcycle was found to be stolen from Columbia. Several items, including narcotics, were found near the scene.
About three hours later, a deputy performed a traffic stop on a Nissan passenger vehicle at the 111 mile marker on ramp eastbound I-70 due to defective equipment. A check on the license plate on the vehicle showed that it was reported stolen from Columbia. The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested and taken to the Cooper County Detention Center
