Wouldn’t it be nice to find out you had some extra cash you didn’t know about or forgot you put in a safe place for the future?
According to State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick there is a lot of unclaimed property that has been deposited with his office. Banks, businesses, and insurance companies turn over unclaimed property to the office after accounts have been inactive and owners cannot be successfully contacted for a statutorily defined period of time, generally five years.
A review of the Unclaimed Property database indicates that there is $1 billion in Unclaimed Property for Missouri in more than 5 million owner accounts. The property is held indefinitely until the owner or a proper heir is located and claims it.
Account owners can file a claim online or request a paper claim be mailed to them at any time by visiting the  Show Me Money website. By law, specific dollar amounts that exceed $50 are not public record but does not impact your ability to claim them. One in ten Missourians has Unclaimed Property, and the average return is $300.
Unclaimed Property can be donated to 20 different charitable organizations operating in Missouri. The process of donating Unclaimed Property can be completed entirely online in most cases.
Missourians can search the Treasurer’s database for their Unclaimed Property 24/7 online.
