The groudbreaking ceremony for the Heckart Community Center in Sedalia took place on Thursday, June 11.
Several people- including Yes Yes Committee Chair Steve Bloess and Sedalia Park Board President Jerry Case and others- offered remarks during the festive occasion.
Sedalia Parks and Recreation Department Director Amy Epple introduced Sue Heckart, whose donation helped fund the project.

Heckart said this facility always has been a dream of hers.

Voters approved an additional one-eighth-of-a-cent sales tax, as well as the removal of the sunset for the capital-improvements tax to fund the rest of the project’s cost.
The center is a nearly 92,000-square-foot facility on the grounds where Jennie Jaynes Stadium once stood. Epple said the facility will have three high-school-sized basketball courts; six volleyball and nine pickleball courts; a competitive pool and leisure pool and a diving well; fitness, wellness and a three-lane walking track; as well as child watch and indoor play. She says it also will be home to the new senior center.
Epple said the actual construction work on the facility is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, with opening scheduled in 2021.
