With Father’s Day quickly approaching, many people are looking to find the right gift for Dad. But if you’re tempted to get him another tie to add to his growing collection, reconsider. According to a recent survey conducted by TopCashback.com, one in four of American dads really want tools on their special day.
And while every dad is special, this year’s Father’s Day celebration is looking to be the most unique yet, with 18 percent of Americans virtually meeting via Zoom or FaceTime to celebrate.
The survey polled a cross-section of 3,048 adults, aged 18 and over.
When asked if they plan on celebrating or doing something special for Father’s Day this year? Seventy percent responded Yes. Over one-third (39 percent) say practicing social-distancing is the main reason they won’t be celebrating this year.
Sixty-six percent said they believe that gifts are necessary on Father’s Day. And what will be Dad be getting this Father’s Day? According to the survey the top three gifts were gift cards, clothes or ties and tools. But, what does Dad really want for Father’s Day? Out of the responses received, 25-percent say tools, 24-percent say gift cards or technology (ie: TV, phone, etc.), 18-percent said they didn’t want anything and only 17-percent said they would prefer a tie or clothing.
While 86-percent of Americans plan to give dad a gift this year, 83-percent will be purchasing dad’s gift online instead of in-person.
Whether you are celebrating dad’s day at home with your family or practicing social-distancing, here are five ways to celebrate Father’s Day this year.

  1. Build something together. Since 25 percent of dads really want tools this year, make it a family activity! If you purchase your dad tools, set up time on Father’s Day to build something together as a family. Whether it’s a birdhouse, shelves or a fun project, building with dad can be a special memory that you cherish. Plus, you will have something tangible to look back on and reminisce. If you can’t spend time in-person, consider scheduling a video call with family and have dad lead everyone in building the item together.
  2. Support a local business. Does dad have a favorite restaurant he loves to go to? Consider purchasing takeout for lunch or dinner to not only enjoy a yummy meal together but also to support a place that needs your business during this time.
  3. Look for ways to save on gifts. You still have plenty of time to get dad tools, gift cards or the latest gadget and if you’re shopping online, don’t forget to stack the savings. First, compare prices on gifts from different stores to make sure you are getting the best price. Then, shop through a cashback site like com to score a percentage of your purchase back in cashback on all qualifying purchases from Lowe’s, Amazon, Raise and more.
  4. Play games together. This Father’s Day, break out of the traditional gift and meal routine and spice up the day with special games and activities. Whether you play a family game of basketball or have a chess tournament, your dad will enjoy the added bonding time. Remember to keep dad’s interest in mind when picking games and activities.
  5. Spend time together. A priceless gift that you can cherish. Whether it’s the whole day or even a social-distanced gathering, spending time together with loved ones is a gift. Even if you can’t spend the day in-person, a phone call or video call is still special.
