For several meetings, the Marshall City Council considered making changes to parking allowed on a certain portion of South Miami Avenue.

The first reading of the ordinance to not allow parking of any vehicles on the street from West Vest to West Arrow Streets was approved 6-2 during the meeting on January 4. However, there was more input from councilmen during this meeting.

First, Ward 2 Councilman Chuck Hines explained why he is not in favor of the ordinance.

Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Guthrey also expressed his concerns.

Ward 4 Councilman Craig Thompson explained most of the people he has talked to who live on that part of the street are in support of no parking on both sides.

City Administrator David Haugland pointed out the council already has had discussions already about an ordinance to limit parking to one side of the street.

The second reading of the ordinance did not receive a motion, so it died on the council floor.

In other news, the council voted to approve the reappointment of Spencer Fricke to the MMU Board of Public Works for a term that expires on January 1, 2025; and appointments of Ward 1 Councilmen Dewey Hendrix to the Board of Building Code Enforcement and Leon Thompson as an alternate for terms that run indefinitely.
