An area law-enforcement officer has issued a public notice about a scam attempt over the phone.

Cooper County Sheriff Chris Class says his office is receiving reports from citizens who are getting phone calls from a person(s) stating that they are with the Social Security Office.

Class says the caller states that social-security numbers have been compromised.

Class says “This is a scam.”

Class reminds residents to not give these people any personal information and do not send money.

Class says, “Please pass the word around to family and friends to just hang up on these people. I do not want to see any of our citizens financially hurt due to this.”

Class says trying to track the phone calls is very difficult because they are usually originating from outside the United States. He says, “As always, feel free to contact the Sheriff’s Office to verify any information if you have any doubts.”
