A 24-year-old Deepwater man died in a head-on traffic crash in Benton County on Sunday, March 14.

According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred as a northbound vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Derrick Spain, of Warsaw, crossed the center line and struck a southbound vehicle, driven by 24-year-old Bailey Jelinek. After impact, the vehicles rotated counterclockwise and were struck by another southbound vehicle, driven by 63-year-old Alan Haverland, of Deepwater.

Jelinek was pronounced deceased at the scene by Benton County Coroner Weston Miller. Spain suffered moderate injuries, and passengers in his vehicle- 25-year-old Kayla Rieves, of Warsaw, sustained serious injuries; and three one-year-old girls, of Warsaw, sustained minor injuries. All of the injured persons were transported to Bothwell Regional Hospital in Sedalia, and Rieves was transported on to University Hospital in Columbia, for treatment. Haverland was not injured. None of the adults in the vehicles involved in the head-on crash was wearing a seat belt.

The crash happened at 4:10 p.m. on Missouri Highway 7, just north of Walking Horse Lane.
