An area law-enforcement officer has been commended for his quick work to save a person’s life.

According to a release from Lexington Police Chief Troy Sims, at approximately 11:21 p.m. on June 7, officer Ryland Sims, Captain Fred Alkire and officer Andrew Beckfield responded to 816 Highland Avenue for a 9-1-1 hang up.

Upon arrival, officers found a 67-year-old female in distress. Officers had Lexington Fire/EMS respond to the residence.

During the transferring to the ambulance, the paramedic suffered an injury. Lexington officers loaded the female onto the ambulance. Officer Ryland Sims noticed the patient had stopped breathing and lost pulse. Officer Sims started CPR immediately and continued chest compressions until the LUCUS instrument was put on line at the hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, emergency room staff members were able to revive the patient. At this time, the patient is now back home and doing well.

Chief Sims says, “At this time, Officer Ryland Sims… is recognized (for) going above and beyond the call of duty by taking actions that saved a life.

Officer Sims’ was honored at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Chief Sims also says, “The Police Department also recognizes Lafayette Regional Health Center (and) Lexington Fire/EMS for their quick response and professionalism in saving this life.”
