Roy Lee Petrie, age 80, of Stover, MO, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Cole Camp, surrounded by his loving daughters and sister.

Memorial service, with full military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 9, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Sedalia, with the family receiving visitors beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.

Roy was born on November 29, 1940, in Kansas City, MO, son of Bert and Louise Petrie. He grew up there with his younger sister, Jeannine, and graduated from Ruskin High School in 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961, proudly serving his country overseas in Germany, until his honorable discharge in 1964.

Roy loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and survivalist. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and skills with anyone genuinely interested in learning, taking the most pride and time in passing his wisdom onto his children and grandchildren. The quality of his workmanship was of the utmost importance to him, and he could be heard to say, “If you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it at all.” He had a quick wit and loved a good joke; possessed a fondness for many different genres of music and was known to skillfully cut-a-rug in his day. Roy’s greatest joy was to be surrounded by his family and friends, and he showered those he loved with immeasurable kindness and generosity. He remained a true patriot throughout his entire life, with unparalleled respect for those who have served in the military, both past and present. He leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, patience and strength, to those of us blessed enough to have loved him.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death on February 25, 2011, by his adoring wife, Diana Scott Petrie, whom he joined in marriage on May 7, 1993. He is survived by two daughters, Melissa Duran and husband, Ken, of Mascoutah, Il; Melanie Prouty and husband, Greg, of Sedalia, MO; six grandchildren, Emily DeMarco and husband, Kyle; Ian Duran; Alexa Rice; Aidan Duran; Alexander Rice; Rowan Prouty; one great-granddaughter, Olive DeMarco; one sister, Jeannine Arens, of Blue Springs; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
