Due to COVID numbers, an area school district has canceled an upcoming annual event.

According to administrators in the Lexington R-5 School District, the top priority of the district is to educate all students in the safest way possible.

They say, due to current school spread of COVID-19- in consultation with administration, staff, health professionals and the Lafayette County Health Department- the Homecoming parade will not take place as scheduled on Friday, October 1.

The administration says the district currently has a large number of students on isolation and quarantine.

Administrators say, “Our goal with mitigation strategies (masking, social distancing, cohorts, etc.) is to keep as many kids as possible learning face to face without interruption. Unfortunately, gathering entire buildings together to participate (on floats – LHS or as spectators – ECC, LBS, LMS) is not conducive to this due to our current circumstances. LHS students do have several celebratory activities scheduled that will occur. Thank you for your understanding, as we all want our kids to have the opportunity to continue to learn in-person safely.”
