Nancy Buerky Murphy, age 78, of rural Slater, was born and raised in Jamestown, Missouri to Carl and Lucy Brizendine Buerky. She married Gerald Murphy of beloved Fish Creek in 1961, and together they raised two children.  

At the age of 50, Nancy became a registered nurse, her lifelong dream that had been put on hold “because the love bug bit”.  She and her husband owned and operated the APCO Service Station in Slater for fifteen years. Affectionately known as “Feather” by those who knew her best, she enjoyed working in her flowers, celebrating others, cooking for loved ones and making them fat, humming unidentifiable melodies, fretting about her kids and the grandchildren who called her “Granny”, and waiting to “cross that bridge when we get there”.  A great passion was teaching those she cared for about Jesus Christ.

She died Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at the University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics in Columbia after complications following back surgery.  She is survived by her husband of sixty years Gerald; two children, Ronnie Murphy and his wife Lesa; and Amy Enwright; four grandsons; three granddaughters-in-law; five great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way; and a brother, Gary Buerky and his wife Charlotte.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law Kirk; three brothers; and a sister.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, at the Missouri State Veterans’ Cemetery in Higginsville, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
