Betty J. Martin, 89, of rural Slater, died Monday, December 27, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 30, at Slater City Cemetery, with Rev. Paul List officiating.  Pallbearers will be Randy Morton, Richie Bryson, Abram Cano, Aaron Dougherty, David Cano and Ray Dougherty. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, December 30, at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to Fitzgibbon Hospital or Big Bend Retreat in care of the funeral home.

Born December 24, 1932 in Slater, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Nannie Fizer Morton. On June 14, 1958 in Slater, she married Dean Martin, and he preceded her in death on December 24, 2010.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Cano and her husband David of Gilliam, and Renita Dougherty and her husband Ray of Holden; four grandchildren, Abram Cano and wife Ashley, Madison Cano, Courtney Dougherty, and Aaron Dougherty; two brothers, A.C. Morton and Harold Morton, both of Slater; and three sisters, Mary Bryson and Mildren Bryson, both of Slater, and Lucille Durham of Polo.  She was preceded in death by four brothers, Curtis Morton, George Morton, Kenneth Morton, and Edward Morton.

Mrs. Martin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Slater.  She was a farm partner with her husband in rural Slater for many years, and drove the Gilliam School bus for over thirty years until her retirement.  She enjoyed volunteering at Big Bend Retreat.
