Gilbert “Elvin” “Pistol” Underwood, 88, of rural Sweet Springs, MO, died Sunday, February 12, 2023, at The Living Center in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Sweet Springs, with William W. Harlow officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Born March 29, 1934, in Saline County, he was the son of the late Donald C. “D.C.” Underwood and Josephine Winslow Underwood. Elvin lived in Saline County his entire life and was a 1952 graduate of Sweet Springs High School. He was drafted into the United States Army following high school and was stationed in Korea. On November 5, 1988, he married Deena Fay Winter who survives of the home. Elvin was a lifelong farmer, had been a truck driver, and served as the Sweet Springs mail carrier for 33 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and former member of the American Legion.

In addition to his wife, Deena; he is survived by three children:  Cindy Flandermeyer (Tim) of Concordia, Bob Underwood (Robin) of Marshall and Jerry Underwood (Karen) of Sweet Springs; two stepchildren, Terry Winter (Lisa) of Oak Grove and Michelle Boland (Donald) of Sweet Springs; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Elvin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Underwood; and one sister, Shirley Hedgpeth Mast.
