A comeback effort by the Kansas City Royals fell short, falling 5-4 to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in the last game before the All-Star Break.

Adam Frazier led off the game with a home run, but the Red Sox responded with two-run blasts in the first and second innings. With Boston threatening again in the third, starter Brady Singer was pulled, having given up eight hits and one walk while fanning three. Boston added another run in the seventh, while the Royals claimed a run in the fourth and a home run by Salvador Perez in the sixth.

Freddy Fermin brought in a run with a single in the ninth, and ended up at second after Boston threw out Garrett Hampson at third. Nick Loftin’s groundout ended the game.

The Royals enter the All-Star Break with a 52-45 mark, falling two games behind Boston in the wild card race but remaining seven games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. Four Royals players are set to appear in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas, including Bobby Witt Jr in Monday night’s Home Run Derby. The Royals start the second half of the season Friday at home against the Chicago White Sox.
