It may not count in the record books, but the Kellie Harper era at Mizzou Arena got off to a less than ideal start with the Mizzou women’s basketball team dropping an exhibition contest Tuesday, Oct. 28 in overtime, 90-84, to Maryville University of Division II’s Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Mizzou scored the first 16 points in the contest, with seven of those points from guard Shannon Dowell in her first game as a Tiger. The Saints were kept scoreless for the first five minutes, as the Tigers led after one by a 19-8 score. That lead the shrank to 29-25 at the half, and went away after Maryville scored 11 three-point baskets in the second half. The Tigers were outscored 25-16 in the third quarter, echoing several of their games from last year. Half of Mizzou’s points in the quarter were from Jordana Reisma. The Tigers were able to tie the game up early in the fourth and keep it close, bringing about the overtime period, which saw Maryville pull away with the win.

Grace Slaughter led the Tigers with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Reisma recorded 21 points, 11 points and five blocks. Dowell added 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals. The Tigers were only three-for-30 from behind the arc. Five Saints were in double figures, led by Lindsey Schadewalt with 23 points, while Olivia Hahn had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The games start counting for the Tigers beginning Monday night at 6:30 p.m., when they start the regular season at Mizzou Arena against Central Arkansas.
