Work continues to turn the former Arrow Rock Schoolhouse into a cultural center for the historic community.
That work included the removal of an addition to the school that was built over 50 years ago, shortly after the school was consolidated into a neighboring district. Village trustee Kirby McCullough says the renovated facility will aim to preserve the original portion of the schoolhouse, which was built in the late 1920s.
.
McCullough says the bulk of the project’s $2.8 million cost was funded by state grants, with additional support from the village’s share of proceeds from the Saline County Economic Development sales tax.
The schoolhouse is regularly used for practices and rehearsals by the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theater, while the village government offices are currently in its basement. McCullough says those offices will move to the first floor of the new wing when it’s finished this summer.
