Jac Caglianone may have a case for winning a Juno, as he delivered five hits at Rogers Centre on Thursday, Aug. 27 in the Kansas City Royals’ 13-2 drubbing of the Toronto Blue Jays to win the series north of the border.
Caglianone capped his five-hit, six RBI night with a home run in the ninth inning, after belting three singles and then a double in the seventh. Four of those RBIs came with two outs. After the previous night’s shut out that snapped a nine-game winning streak, the Royals set the tone on the second pitch of the game, when Carter Jensen smacked his 18th home run of the year. Salvador Perez doubled the lead later in the frame with a fielder’s choice that resulted in a fielding error by starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti. The next inning saw the Royals double their lead again, when Caglianone brought home two runs with a line-drive single to right field.
The Royals piled it on Toronto in the sixth inning, with RBI doubles from Kyle Isbel and Bobby Witt Junior. Caglianone added another RBI single, then scored on Vinnie Pasquantino’s ninth home run of the year. The Jays got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when George Springer brought home two runs with his 13th long bomb of the season. Pasquantino collected another RBI single in the eighth.
Noah Cameron went six innings for his ninth win of the year, allowing the two-run home run on six hits and two walks, striking out three. Arrighetti took the loss with four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out four. Simeon Woods Richardson was torched for six runs on five hits and two walks in the sixth, while former Royal Michael Lorenzen spent two innings on the mound, allowing a run on three hits and a walk while fanning a pair.
The Royals improve to 60-75, still trailing Cleveland for the third wild card spot by 8.5 games. A three-game series awaits the Royals in Cleveland starting Friday evening, with Michael Wacha on the mound against Tanner Bibee. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m.
