Charges have been filed against a Niangua man after a fatal motor vehicle accident involving pedestrians was reported near the Isle of Capri Casino in Boonville on July 4.
Officers with the Boonville Police Department were dispatched to the accident scene near the casino’s entrance at 3:24 p.m. Upon arrival, officers learned that two elderly pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle driven by Daniel Dunn. Both pedestrians were taken to a Columbia hospital, where one of them succumbed to their injuries and died on July 23.
Police spoke to Dunn, who claimed he put his vehicle in reverse in order gain the attention of valet. Dunn then stated his foot slipped off of the brake pedal onto the accelerator, causing the vehicle to reverse rapidly and strike the two pedestrians. Police note in their probable cause statement that the casino does not have valet parking.
Police also reviewed video footage of the incident, which showed Dunn place the vehicle in reverse and run over the pedestrians. Authorities also say the passenger door of Dunn’s vehicle opened and struck one of the pedestrians in the head.
Dunn has been charged with a felony for involuntary manslaughter in the first degree. Court arrangements are pending at this time.
