25-1005-wideshot-of-ffam-memorial-service

The Howard County man whose death last year was attributed to his service in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is among five names that will be added this weekend to the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri.

Larry Roland Duncan was part of Missouri Task Force One when it was deployed to New York in 2001 to aid in the recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Duncan became among the hundreds of first responders who would develop an illness tied to his service there, ultimately passing away from it Jan. 15, 2025. He had been serving with the Howard County Fire Protection District at the time of his death, after starting his career in Cooper County in 1984. Because his illness was tied to his service at Ground Zero, Duncan’s death is considered as having occurred in the line of duty.

Duncan and four other firefighters who died in the line of duty will be memorialized during a series of events this weekend by the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri. Firefighter families will gather Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City for a candlelight vigil. The ceremony adding five names to the memorial’s wall of honor will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. In the event of inclement weather, the Auxvasse Elementary School gymnasium will serve as the rain site.

As part of this weekend’s proceedings, Governor Mike Kehoe has proclaimed Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026 as Fire Service Memorial Day. The Missouri State Capitol dome in Jefferson City will shine red in honor of the state’s fallen firefighters both Saturday and Sunday night.
