Harrison Butker was once again the hero in a bitterly fought game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals, as his 51-yard field goal with time expiring gave the Chiefs a 26-25 win.
The Chiefs struggled to establish the offense, with Patrick Mahomes picked off twice and fullback Carson Steele losing the football late in the second quarter. Mahomes’ second interception, however, set up a defensive script-flipper to start the fourth. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow fumbled the ball as he was being sacked by Mike Danna, setting up Chamarri Conner’s 38-yard scoop and score that put the Chiefs ahead 23-22.
The Bengals kept the Chiefs on their toes, as Joe Burrow threw for two touchdowns and 258 yards, going 23-for-36. However, the Bengals could not get out of their own way, committing eight penalties for 79 yards, including a pass interference penalty that set up Butker’s game-winner. Bengals kicker Evan McPherson went four-for-four on field goals, including from 53 yards, but his second extra point attempt went wide right. Mahomes finished the game 18-for-25 with 151 yards and two touchdown passes, one to Rashee Rice and the other to lineman Wanya Morris. Isiah Pacheco recorded 19 carries for 90 yards, and five catches for 21 yards, to lead the Chiefs offense.
The Chiefs are now 2-0 and hit the road for their first away game of the season next week, a Sunday Night matchup at the Atlanta Falcons.
