A few dozen Marshall residents turned out to meet the Marshall Police Department’s newest K-9 Officer, Razor, at the Martin Community Center on Wednesday night.
Razor’s handler and police officer Joey Valliquette said the department purchased Razor, a multi-purpose German Shepherd/Belgian mix, who is originally from Hungary, with money donated and raised through a golf tournament last summer. The goal was to raise $11,100, but the events fetched more than $14,000.
Valliquette said since Razor, who responds to commands in German, has completed training and certification, they have been out on several calls.
Marshall Police Chief Mike Donnell explained Razor’s talents go beyond that of a narcotics K-9, like that of the previous K-9, Boomer, who is retired. He said Razor can search for missing people.

During the exercise officer Valliquette had set up, Razor immediately found a packet of methamphetamine that was placed in one of six boxes with cutout holes in the top that had been placed on the floor.
Also, Ed Reis, vice president and trust officer at Wood & Huston Bank, announced the bank will spring for the $1,000 it will cost to purchase a bullet- and stab-proof vest for Razor. The vest will be specifically fitted for Razor in the near future.
