On Wednesday, January 24, the Saline County task force got together at the old schoolhouse in Arrow Rock to discuss ideas and possible projects proceeds will fund, provided a countywide sales-tax measure is passed by voters in a little over two months.
During the meeting of the Saline County Commission on Thursday, January 25, Presiding Commissioner Kile Guthrey Jr. said out of all of the meetings that have been held to this point, this was the most positive, with all of the representatives of the towns being on board. He also listed several projects that have been proposed.
Southern District Commissioner Monte Fenner said it has been estimated that the cost of the tax, if it passes, will be about eight cents per day per county resident. But that will fluctuate depending on how much money each family spends.
The proposed sales tax– which has a sunset of 20 years– is estimated to rake in about $1.1 million per year, with about a third of the projected money going toward a water project at the junction. The rest of the proceeds are to be divvied up between the communities for the various proposed projects.
Voters will go to the polls to decide the fate of the proposed one-half-cent sales tax for Saline County economic development on Tuesday, April 3.
