A Marshall man reported to the Marshall Police Department that he was a victim of a scam over the phone last week.
A report from the police department says the alleged victim received a call from a man on January 24 and was told by the caller that the city of Marshall utilities was going to turn off his utilities that night if he did not pay $500 of a $990 past-due bill. The alleged victim reportedly was told to purchase a Green Dot Money Pak card at Dollar General. The alleged victim did that, and then read off the numbers on the card to the caller. The caller then demanded the alleged victim go and put the rest of the money due on another card and give him the same information to avoid being shut off.
At that point, the alleged victim reportedly told the caller that he was going to contact the police department. The alleged scammer reportedly became irate and disconnected the call.
The Green Dot Pak cards and receipts reportedly were seized as evidence by the police.
The investigation into the possible scam is continuing.
