The Friends of Arrow Rock’s Lecture Series is scheduled to present its first lecture of the year at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitors’ Center on February 3.
According to a news release, retired assistant professor of Human Geography at the University of Missouri and co-president of the Mid-Missouri Organization for Storytelling, Dr. Larry Brown, is scheduled to present a lecture called “Missouri’s Alexander the Great: Alexander William Doniphan”.
Dr. Brown will share life stories of Doniphan, (Pictured Left) who was known for refusing an order to execute Mormon founder Joseph Smith and his followers during the Mormon Wars in 1838, and was hailed as a hero of the Mexican War when he led his troops on one of the longest and most successful marches in American military history. Also, Doniphan later became a prosperous businessman and helped establish William Jewell College in Liberty.
The lecture begins at 10 a.m., and is free and open to the public.
Following the lecture, the Experience Arrow Rock tourism committee will host a chili and soup luncheon at Arrow Rock’s Old Schoolhouse, where lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Attendees will get a choice from among a variety of chilis and soups, plus a hot roll and drink for $7.50, as well as a homemade dessert for an additional $2.50.
