Area authorities are warning residents about a scam.
According to a news release, the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports from residents getting unsolicited calls from a “deputy,” “sergeant,” or “lieutenant” telling them they have a warrant for their arrest for failure to appear for jury duty. The caller reportedly then pressures for payment of bond to avoid them being arrested and taken to jail. In some cases, names of local law-enforcement officials reportedly have been used to better convince the victim of the call’s legitimacy.
Authorities warn that this is a scam. They say deputies will not call you about an arrest warrant, nor will you ever be asked to make payment over the phone, wire money or purchase pre-loaded cards from a store for bond. As with other types of scams, do not be drawn in by unsolicited calls asking for personal information or demanding payment from you.
Pettis County Sheriff’s deputies reportedly are investigating the matter.
If you have questions regarding this or any other criminal activity, authorities urge you to call the Pettis County Sheriff’s office at (660) 827-0052.
