The latest meeting of the Develop Saline County Task Force was held on Wednesday, February 28, at Sweet Springs City Hall.
According to a news release, Marshall-Saline Development Corporation Executive Director Stan Moore said a website– www.DevelopSalineCounty.com– has been set up specifically to inform the public about the half-cent sales-tax proposal that will be put before voters during the Municipal Election on April 3. Moore said, in addition, a brochure is available at the Saline County Courthouse, city offices in Slater and Sweet Springs and various locations in Arrow Rock.
The eight-member panel– which includes Moore, Northern and Southern District Commissioners Richard Clemens and Monte Fenner; Kirby McCullough, of Arrow Rock; Marshall City Administrator David Haugland; Slater City Administrator Gene Griffith; Sweet Springs City Clerk Michelle Fuehring; and Greg Swift, representing the Highway 65/I-70 Junction– set up bylaws during the meeting. The board is scheduled to meet semiannually, provided the measure is approved by voters.
The board has determined 20 percent of the funds will go to Marshall, Slater, Sweet Springs and Arrow Rock, with the other 20 percent spread throughout the rest of the county’s communities. A big chunk– approximately $7 million– of projected proceeds is to be used for the water project at the Highway 65/I-70 Junction. The tax is estimated to rake in about $1.1 million per year during its 20-year span.
