A program honoring military veterans has expanded to include veterans from a couple of more-recent foreign wars.
According to a news release from former Saline County Northern District Commissioner Charlie Guthrie, the American Legion and V.F.W. posts of Slater are coordinating with the Missouri Veterans’ Recognition Program of Jefferson City in the expansion of the program.
In addition to veterans of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the program now will include veterans of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield (from August 7, 1990, through June 7, 1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn (from March 19, 2003, through December 15, 2011).
There are several qualifications the applicant must meet, including the veteran must have served on active duty during one of the time periods listed– but not necessarily involved in any of the conflicts.
Applications are available to be picked up at the office of Saline County Collector Cindi Sims at the courthouse in Marshall; or from Ed Reis (Rice) at Wood & Huston Bank in Marshall, Theresa Thomason at Exchange Bank in Slater or Duane Vogelsmeier at Community Bank in Sweet Springs.
