A Sweet Springs man, who allegedly shot a BB gun in the direction of two youths on April 12, has been charged with a felony.
According to a probable-cause statement, a school official contacted Sweet Springs Police after girls said 30-year-old James Mayberry had shot a BB gun at them that morning at their residence.
Mayberry allegedly admitted to authorities he shot the BB gun in what he said was an attempt to “motivate” the children to get up and go to school.
Online court documents say Mayberry has been charged with a Class D Felony for Endangering the Welfare of a Child- Creating a Substantial Risk in the First Degree- First Offense- No Sexual Conduct. Bond has been set at $10,000 cash or surety, with 10 percent approved, with several conditions.
Mayberry was arraigned while in custody on April 13, and his cause has been continued for a counsel-status hearing at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at Saline County Circuit Court.
