An area sheriff’s department is warning citizens about a scam.
According to a post on its Facebook page, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has received reports that scammers are contacting citizens and stating they are with its office. The caller reportedly tells the person that they have an active warrant for failure to appear for jury duty. The caller also requests that the person purchase gift cards to pay the fine for the warrant.
The caller I.D. shown on your phone will appear as if it’s the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office that is calling. The scammers are using an App that allows them to change the number that will appear on your caller I.D.
The sheriff’s office wants citizens to know you will never receive a call from its office requesting money to pay for a warrant over the phone. If you receive a call requesting this, authorities say just simply hang up.
