State Treasurer Eric Schmitt is encouraging Missourians to honor fallen veterans over Memorial Day weekend by helping his office reconnect unclaimed military medals with their rightful owners.
According to a news release, Schmitt’s Unclaimed Property Division currently is looking to identify the owners of 84 medals and 123 insignia. Military medals and insignia held by the State Treasurer’s Office come from safe deposit boxes that have been turned over after five years of inactivity or no contact from the owner.
Pictures of military medals and insignia that have been turned over to the Unclaimed Property Division are paired with the names and addresses of the last-known owners on the website, www.treasurer.mo.gov/military. The list includes 207 items and is searchable by name, city, county and medal type.
These items are a small part of the more than $900 million of Unclaimed Property protected by Schmitt’s office. One in 10 Missourians has Unclaimed Property, and the average return is around $300. Individuals, businesses and local governments can search for their Unclaimed Property on www.ShowMeMoney.com.
