The MMU Board of Public Works gave the OK to recommend a $2.5 million electric project to the city council for final approval during its meeting on Thursday, June 28.
Electric Distribution Director Jeff Bergstrom said the Southeast Substation power transformer and medium voltage switchgear, which were installed in 1976, are reaching the end of their life cycles.
Bergstrom added in talking with the electrical engineering firm, LD&B, both sides formulated a cost-effective solution to remedy the situation.

Bergstrom said adding a new transformer and pairing it with the existing one makes the electric system stronger and more reliable for customers. With the project scheduled to take several years to complete, the board approved to recommend the city council authorize the mayor to sign the proposal.
In other business, Bergstrom gave an update on the efforts of installing new electric meters.

The next MMU Board of Public Works meeting is scheduled on Thursday, July 12.
