The athletic program at Marshall High School was recently recognized by a national organization for providing its student athletes with the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment.
According to a news release, the athletic program received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award. The award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools which provide safe environments for its student athletes.
Marshall High School Principal Jacob Sirna said “Marshall High School is honored to receive this recognition from NATA, and we remain committed to keeping our athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices, and games so their own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship and good health can be accomplished. This award was only accomplished through the dedication and hard work of our athletic trainer, activities director, and coaches. Fitzgibbon Hospital certainly deserves our recognition and appreciation for providing our athletes with a truly outstanding trainer in Diane Schlesselman.”
To be considered for the award, athletic programs had to meet certain criteria: Create a positive athletic health care administrative system; Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations; Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities; Plan for selection, fit, function, and proper maintenance of athletic equipment; Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes; Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions; Provide or facilitate injury intervention; Create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan; Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education; Educate MHS athletes and parents of the potential benefits and risks in sports, as well as their responsibilities.
