The Concordia Board of Aldermen set the tax rate for this year and approved an ordinance regarding seat belt usage within city limits during its meeting on Monday, August 22.
City Administrator Dale Klussman said the board approved the proposed tax of just below $.54 per $100 of assessed valuation of real and personal property after holding a public hearing prior to the start of the regular-session meeting.
In other business, Klussman said the board approved an ordinance to regulate the use of seat belts and child restraints in a motor vehicle within city limits. Klussman said the ordinance will cause a secondary penalty to occurred for a driver who is noticed to not be wearing a seat belt before a traffic stop is initiated. Klussman gave an example how a motorist will be fined a maximum of $10 for a seat belt violation– if a driver is pulled over for speeding or other violation, and isn’t found to be wearing a seat belt, they will incur the secondary penalty– which will be handled by the municipal court, depending on the primary driving violation.
Also during the meeting, Klussman said the board decided not to vote on an ordinance regarding the regulation of garage sales due to lack of feedback or support from the community on the issue.
