Two Saline County youths were among a handful of statewide 4-H members selected to sell original handmade items to Missouri State Fair goers last month.
According to a news release, Kaitlyn Aulgur(left,) a member of the Work-to-Win 4-H Club, and Ashlyn Igo(right), a member of the Bizy Beavers 4-H Club, were selected for the Show-Me 4-H Wares program, which encourages youths to start and run their own business with skills learned through 4-H projects. Altogether, youths earned more than $2,000 in sales, and learned how to calculate and remit state sales tax.
Aulgur was selected for Handmade lye soaps and lotions which she sells as part of her business, Chicory Lane Soaps & Salve
Igo was selected for leather earrings in variety of shapes, colors and sizes which she sells as part of her business, Leather Jewelry Designs by Salt Fork Spurs.
The 4-H participants said selling their own work to the public boosted their confidence, enhanced their conversational/social skills, and prompted them to consider next steps in becoming entrepreneurs.
4-H is the youth development program of the University of Missouri, and part of the nation’s Cooperative Extension System.
