The Pettis County Health Center has some tips for residents to be prepared for certain disaster situations as a part of Preparedness Month this September.
According to a news release, the organization says residents have a lot of decisions to make during severe weather situations, such as tornadoes and power outages, and those decisions can be less daunting if a person is prepared.
Missourians do not have to deal with many weather events that require long distance evacuation to seek safety such as hurricanes, but tornadoes are often the worst weather situation to deal with in the state. The need to seek safe shelter is a quick decision with minimal time to gather belongings.
The Pettis County Health Center has two suggestions for residents to be prepared for those events that may cause power outages, limit travel on roads or separate families– make a plan with family or neighbors on where to meet if you can’t go home, as well as practice those plans; and have a kit that contains ready to eat food, water, clothing, cash, flashlights, extra batteries, a radio and any other supplies that are needed for medical purposes.
The Pettis County Health Center also has printed materials to help you develop your plan and discuss any special health care needs your family may have, including resources available in the county.
