An area law-enforcement agency is warning residents of a scam.
According to a post on the Benton County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page, the telephone numbers change often, but the scams stay close to the same.
Scammers are calling area residents saying they are with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, and you have a warrant for your arrest. They go on to say you missed jury duty, and to avoid being arrested you need to pay them money over the phone. Some are even saying they will meet you in the sheriff’s office’s parking lot.
Sheriff Shawn Holloway assures residents, “We will not meet you in the parking lot to do business or take your money over the phone.”
He says if the sheriff’s office has legal business with you, it will ask you to come and speak with someone inside the office.
Holloway advises that if you receive a call like this, you should hang up and call your nearest law-enforcement agency.
