A man who was an inmate at an area jail has been charged with a felony for allegedly striking another inmate, who later died as a result of the altercation.
According to a probable-cause statement, the warden at the Boonville Correctional Center told the investigator that on October 13, 2018, George Black had a physical altercation with another individual. Black reportedly struck the other individual in the face with a closed fist; and the other person fell to the ground, hit his head and lost consciousness. On October 14, the victim was declared dead by staff at University Hospital in Columbia.
Black reportedly told another investigator that he had struck the victim and knocked him to the floor. The investigator also spoke to two other inmates who said Black had been agitating the victim- asking him to fight before the altercation took place.
Online court documents say a warrant has been issued, and Black, who was born in 1984, has been charged with a Class C Felony for Involuntary Manslaughter in the First Degree, with bond being set at $50,000 cash or surety.
Black’s initial hearing at Cooper County Circuit Court is pending.
