Governor Mike Parson declared October 30 as Weatherization Day in Missouri as Community Action Agencies across the state held events demonstrating diagnostic tools for assessing home efficiency and measures taken to weatherize homes.
A news release says with colder weather approaching, Missourians can lower their heating bill by taking steps to make sure their homes are weatherized and as energy efficient as possible.
Weatherization is the practice of protecting a home and its inhabitants from the adverse effects and wear-and-tear of weather and elements. This long-term approach to assistance includes weather-stripping and caulking, but it’s so much more than that. Weatherization is about modifying a building to reduce energy consumption, increase energy efficiency, and make homes safer for families.
10 Tips to Help Lower Energy Costs in Colder Weather:
1. Turn down the thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees.
2. Close the fireplace damper when fireplace is not in use.
3. Fill gaps in exterior doors with weather stripping and caulking.
4. Keep furniture away from vents and keep the vent vacuumed.
5. Wear layers of clothing and dress warm.
6. Unplug appliances when not in use.
7. Open shades and curtains to allow the sun to help warm your house during the day. Close curtains and shades at night to keep in the heat.
8. Turn down water heater temperature to 120 degrees.
9. Install a low-flow showerhead.
