The deadline to file to run for Mayor and positions on the city council was 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15.
According the list of candidates- provided by Marshall City Clerk Julie Lewis- who have filed to run, there will be two races among these positions.
Two-term Mayor Mark Gooden, who first was elected to the post in 2011 and has filed to run again, will have two challengers. According to the list, John Cozort and Julie Schwetz also are vying for the four-year office.
Kathy Vasquez, who was appointed in August to replace Rudy Reyes as Ward 4 Councilperson, also will face opposition, as Cody Samson has filed to run against her. The winner of that race will fill out the rest of Reyes’ unexpired term, which runs through April 2020. By ordinance, Reyes- who was reelected to his position in April 2018- had to resign from the council because he moved out of his ward.
Current council members running unopposed are Dewey Hendrix in Ward 1; Chuck Hines in Ward 2; Charlie Guthrey in Ward 3; and Tom Hagedorn in Ward 4. Each of those council seats is a two-year term.
The Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, April 2.
