The Missouri Department of Transportation reports last year’s fatal traffic crash numbers were down, but it was the third year in a row in which over 900 people lost their lives on Missouri’s roadways.
According to a news release, preliminary numbers reportedly indicate 918 people died in traffic crashes in 2018, down slightly from 932 fatalities in 2017. Reportedly, the majority of these fatal crashes are caused by preventable situations such as a vehicle’s speed, distractions, impairment and fatigue, as well as cell phone use by the driver.
Since 2014, cell phone related crashes have grown 35 percent and is one of the fastest growing causes of fatal crashes in the state according to MoDOT officials.
Nearly all fatal crashes are preventable if drivers pay attention to speed limits, traffic signs and laws. Also, everyone can help improve safety by taking two simple actions: always buckle up and put down the phone when driving.
