An area high school student recently received a national award for volunteering and raising funds for an animal shelter in Pettis County.
According to a news release, Erika Hilario, a senior at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, has been recognized for her exemplary volunteer service by being honored with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
As a member of Girl Scout Troupe 104, Hilario and her fellow scouts sold homemade cookies to raise funds for the Sedalia Animal Shelter and also volunteered at the shelter. Hilario worked more than 250 hours at the shelter and raised about $2,000 for new blankets, toys and food.
The award was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.
