One of the candidates who had filed to run for a spot on the Marshall City Council has withdrawn.
According to a release from Marshall City Clerk Julie Lewis, Cody Samson has pulled out as a candidate for the one-year term in Ward 4. That means incumbent Kathy Vasquez, who was appointed in August 2018 to replace Rudy Reyes, will be running unopposed. By ordinance, Reyes- who was reelected to his position in April 2018- had to resign from the council because he moved out of his ward.
Current council members also running unopposed are Dewey Hendrix in Ward 1; Chuck Hines in Ward 2; Charlie Guthrey in Ward 3; and Tom Hagedorn in Ward 4. Each of those council seats carries a two-year term.
So, that means there will be only one contested race in the city of Marshall.
Two-term Mayor Mark Gooden, who first was elected to the post in 2011 and has filed to run again, will have two challengers. According to a previous list provided by Lewis, John Cozort and Julie Schwetz also are vying for the four-year office.
Absentee voting began on February 19 and continues during regular business through 5 p.m. on Monday, April 1, at the Saline County Clerk’s office. The polls will be open for the Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 2.
