A Sweet Springs man has been charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting an 89-year-old man on Thursday, February 28.
According to a probable-cause statement, a law-enforcement officer was dispatched to the 700 block of West Old Highway 40 to investigate the report of the assault. The elderly man was found on the cement floor of the shop with blood near his head. The victim was unable to speak but reportedly was moving his legs trying to get up.
Authorities talked to Danny Brian Thompson, who had made the call, and he reportedly admitted the two men were arguing, and the elderly man got in his face, so he backhanded the elderly man. He said the victim fell and hit his head when he landed.
Thompson was arrested, and the victim reportedly was transported by Sweet Springs E.M.S. to the helipad at I-70 Community Hospital and flown by helicopter to another hospital for treatment.
Online court documents say 57-year-old Thompson has been charged with a Class D Felony for Assault in the Second Degree. Bond has been set at $15,000 cash or surety, with one of the conditions being he is to wear a GPS monitoring device upon release.
Thompson’s initial hearing is pending at Saline County Circuit Court.
