For folks old enough remember the “Great Flood of 1993,” the level of the Missouri River is higher now than it was then at one location in the KMMO listening area.
As of Monday, March 25, leaders of some area communities were asking residents to volunteer to help with sandbagging efforts to help curb floodwater.
According to information on the National Weather Service’s website, at Napoleon, the river crested at 28.12 feet. It nearly reached major flood stage, which is listed at 30 feet. At 4 a.m. today, the level was 27.86 feet. In 1993, the river crested at 26.7 feet. In 2007, the river crested at 28.86 feet.
At Waverly, the river is predicted to crest at 31.6 feet- over the major flood level of 31 feet- sometime this morning. The river was at 31.15 feet- the same level the river rose to in 1993- at 4:30 a.m. today. It is predicted to start falling later today.
At Miami, major flood stage is 29 feet, and the latest level recorded was 29.2 feet at 5:32 p.m. Monday, March 25- which also is predicted to be the crest. In 1993, the river rose to 32.6 feet.
At Glasgow, the latest level was recorded as 31.28 feet at 4:30 a.m. today. It’s predicted to reach 31.8 feet later today before it starts falling. Major flood stage is listed as 32 feet. In 1993, the river level topped out at 39.5 feet.
At Boonville, major flood stage is listed at 36 feet, and the latest level was 27.53 feet at 4:30 a.m. today. It is expected to crest at 27.7 feet late tonight or early tomorrow morning. In 1993, the river level reached 37.1 feet.
