A Brunswick man who allegedly assaulted a woman and refused to cooperate with law enforcement on Sunday, May 5, has been charged with two felonies in Chariton County.
According to a probable-cause statement, the woman says 32-year-old Marty Joe Bennett choked her twice and hit her in the chin, causing her to bite her tongue. After arrival on the scene, the law-enforcement officer says the woman had a noticeable red mark on her neck.
When trying to apprehend Bennett, authorities say he resisted and attempted to pull the firearm from the officer’s duty belt. Eventually, Bennett had to be pepper sprayed, and then he complied.
According to online court documents, Bennett has been charged with a Class B Felony for Assault in the Second Degree- Special Victim; a Class E Felony for Resisting Arrest; and a misdemeanor for domestic assault. Bond has been set at $5,000 cash only.
Bennett entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment on May 7. A counsel-status hearing for Bennett is scheduled to be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Chariton County Circuit Court.
