The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has awarded the Heard Memorial Club House in Sedalia a special projects grant totaling $10,000.
A news release says the funds will be applied to a stabilization project on the home’s carriage house, which is more than a century old. The project is scheduled to begin July 2019.
The Heard Memorial Club House- a two-story, buff brick, classical revival house with “eclectic Italian Renaissance” accents- property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1906 as a residence for U.S. Representative and Mrs. John Heard, the property was entrusted by Lillian Heard in 1935 for use by Sorosis Club and Helen G. Steely Music Club.
Sorosis, the second-oldest women’s organization in Missouri, focuses on self-improvement and education. The Helen G. Steely Music Club, established in 1893, began as a music club that encouraged music education in the schools. The Music Club was instrumental in organizing the Sedalia Symphony, the second-oldest symphony west of the Mississippi River.
Funding for the stabilization project was made possible through the sponsorship of Osage Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
